Optiq vs Otter for confidentiality-sensitive professionals

Otter is a mature cloud transcription service with a large feature set aimed at sales, recruiting, and general business teams. Recordings and transcripts are stored on Otter's servers, its proprietary AI is trained on de-identified user recordings by default, and meetings are usually captured by a visible Otter Notetaker bot that joins the call. HIPAA support exists, but only as an add-on on the custom-priced Enterprise tier.
Optiq takes the opposite approach for teams whose conversations are sensitive by default. Nothing dials into the call, recordings and notes stay on your machine, and model calls default to zero data retention on every plan. Optiq is in private beta for confidentiality-first organizations, so if you need a self-serve product you can adopt this afternoon, Otter is the more established choice today.

Where your recordings actually go
The biggest difference is architectural. Otter is a cloud service: audio is uploaded, transcribed on Otter's servers, and stored there. Otter's privacy policy says personal information is kept for as long as necessary to provide the service, and its security page describes AES-256 encryption at rest on AWS in the US. That is a normal setup for a cloud product, but it means every sensitive conversation your team records exists on infrastructure you do not control, for a retention period you do not set.
Optiq records on your device and keeps the audio there. Transcription requests are relayed through a confidential backend to zero data retention models, so audio is processed transiently and nothing is stored server-side. The finished transcript and note land in an encrypted database on your machine, and the saved audio means a failed transcription step can be retried without re-recording anyone.
Who learns from your meetings
Otter is upfront about this in its privacy policy: it trains its proprietary AI on de-identified audio recordings and transcriptions. De-identification is real protection, but it is a process you have to trust rather than verify, and it is on by default for individual, Pro, and Business accounts. Enterprise workspaces are excluded by default, and the policy discloses no opt-out mechanism for the other tiers.
Optiq does not train on your data on any plan. Model calls default to private Venice models with zero data retention, meaning nothing stored and nothing trained on, and there is no de-identify-then-train pipeline anywhere in the product.
The HIPAA question
Otter announced HIPAA compliance in July 2025, and it works the way enterprise compliance usually does: HIPAA support is an add-on on the custom-priced Enterprise tier, activated by signing a business associate agreement through your account executive. If your organization is large enough to buy Enterprise, that is a real option.
Optiq is in private beta and does not claim HIPAA compliance today. We think saying that plainly beats implying otherwise. What we offer instead is an architecture where the sensitive material never leaves your machine in the first place, which shrinks what any compliance program has to cover.
