Optiq vs ChatGPT for confidentiality-sensitive professionals

Optiq vs ChatGPT

ChatGPT is where most professionals first met AI, and it remains the most capable general assistant you can buy. It is also a cloud product with cloud defaults: on the consumer tiers most individuals actually use, conversations are stored in your account history on OpenAI's servers and used to train OpenAI's models unless you find the opt-out toggle. OpenAI now offers regulated-industry tiers, including healthcare-specific BAAs, which we cover honestly below, but those protections depend on being on exactly the right plan with the right paperwork.

Optiq starts from the opposite default. Your chats, notes, transcripts, and agent memory live in an encrypted database on your machine, model calls go to private models with zero data retention, and nothing is trained on your data on any plan. There is no toggle to find because there is nothing to opt out of.

Choose ChatGPT if

ChatGPT is hard to beat as a general-purpose assistant.

  • You want the broadest general capability, plugins, and model selection available anywhere.
  • You need AI on mobile and the web, not just the desktop.
  • Your organization is on Enterprise or ChatGPT for Healthcare with a signed BAA, and every relevant seat is covered.
  • Your work does not involve information you would mind living in cloud chat history.

Choose Optiq if

Optiq is for teams whose default tool should not have cloud defaults.

  • You want chats, notes, and transcripts stored on the device, not in account history on someone's servers.
  • You want a hard guarantee that nothing is trained on your data, with no toggle to remember.
  • You want meeting notes on macOS and Windows with nothing joining the call and notes that stay local.
  • You want dictation that types into your EHR, email, or documents, not just into a chat box.

Where your words go

OpenAI is transparent about how consumer ChatGPT works: conversations are stored in your account, and by default they are used to train OpenAI's models unless you turn on the opt-out. Even with training off, giving feedback on a response can send that whole conversation for training, and temporary chats are still kept for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring. None of this is hidden; it is simply the standard bargain of a consumer cloud product. The question for any team handling privileged, confidential, or patient information is whether that bargain fits the work.

Optiq was built so the question does not come up. Conversations live in an encrypted database on your machine, whose key sits in your operating system's keychain. Model calls are relayed through a confidential backend to private Venice models with zero data retention: nothing stored, nothing trained on, on any plan. When a chat never becomes a server-side record, there is nothing to opt out of and nothing to subpoena. There is more detail on our security page.

The regulated-industry fine print

Credit where due: OpenAI has built out real compliance paths for regulated industries. For healthcare specifically, there are BAAs for the API, for sales-managed Enterprise and Edu accounts, a dedicated ChatGPT for Healthcare workspace, and a free ChatGPT for Clinicians tier where verified US clinicians can sign an in-product BAA. If your organization sets one of those up properly, that is a real compliance path, though it is healthcare-specific; ChatGPT does not offer an equivalent packaged compliance tier for law firms or financial advisory practices managing privileged or fiduciary data.

The catch is coverage. The BAA protects the seats and workspaces it covers, and nothing else. The clinician on the free Clinicians tier is covered; the practice manager pasting a patient email into their personal Plus account is not, and there is no equivalent tier at all for an associate at a law firm or an advisor at a wealth management practice pasting a client email into their personal account. OpenAI explicitly offers no BAA for consumer tiers or Business. Compliance that depends on every person being on the right tier with the right toggle is fragile. Optiq's answer is one architecture for every seat: local storage and zero retention are not a plan feature, they are how the product works.

Two very different agents

ChatGPT's Work agent runs primarily in OpenAI's cloud: it operates on files and tasks on their infrastructure, with a desktop-local mode available on some plans. Optiq's agent runs on your machine, sandboxed by default, and anything risky, like writing a file or running a command, stops and waits for your approval. For file work involving sensitive material, where the agent runs is not an implementation detail. It decides whose infrastructure your documents pass through.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT train on my conversations?

On consumer tiers (Free, Go, Plus, Pro), yes by default, with an opt-out in settings. Submitting feedback can still send that conversation for training. Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare tiers are excluded from training by default. Optiq never trains on your data on any plan.

Is ChatGPT HIPAA compliant?

It can be, on specific tiers with paperwork: OpenAI offers BAAs for the API, sales-managed Enterprise and Edu accounts, ChatGPT for Healthcare, and a free ChatGPT for Clinicians tier for verified US clinicians. There is no BAA for consumer tiers or ChatGPT Business. Optiq is in private beta and makes no HIPAA claims yet.

Can ChatGPT take meeting notes?

Yes, record mode transcribes and summarizes meetings, but it is limited to paid plans and the macOS desktop app, transcripts are stored in cloud chat history, and on consumer plans with training enabled they can be used to train models. Optiq records on the device on macOS and Windows, keeps notes local, and never sends anything to be trained on.

Can ChatGPT dictate into other apps?

No. ChatGPT's dictation transcribes into its own message box. Optiq's dictation types cleaned-up text into whatever app your cursor is in: email, documents, browser, anything.

Can my team use Optiq today?

Optiq is rolling out through a private beta for organizations that want ChatGPT's capability without ChatGPT's cloud defaults. Book a demo and we will walk your team through it.
